Functional Psychiatry in Indianapolis

What Is Functional Psychiatry? Discover Whole-Person Mental Health Support

Functional psychiatry is a whole-person approach that concentrates on more than just the surface of your mental health issues. Its goal is to uncover and treat their root causes. Instead of focusing only on diagnosis and medication, integrative psychiatry explores how factors, such as:

Impact how you feel. When you work with Bethany, our experienced psychiatric nurse practitioner (psych NP), you'll get personalized care that blends medical insight and medication treatment with additional evidence-based strategies to help you feel better and achieve a long-lasting physical and mental change.

Mental health conditions (such as anxiety or depression) are often symptoms of deeper imbalances within your body. Integrative or functional psychiatry offers a deeper, whole-person approach to your mental health.

What To Expect From Integrative Psychiatry

When it comes to integrative psychiatry, our focus is to explore the underlying causes of your symptoms through comprehensive lab work, functional testing, and collaborative dialogue. We do more than just typical symptom relief. We focus on helping you achieve lasting, long-term wellness and balance in your daily functioning.

Personalized care based on your unique health history
Functional psychiatry takes time to understand your unique situation, including your genetics, life experiences, physical health, and habits. This makes treatment fully tailored to your individual situation.
Integration of conventional and complementary treatments
Bethany will provide you with a holistic evaluation and treatment plan. Apart from the standard psychiatric approach, the plan of care can include lifestyle changes, diet changes, herbs and supplements, and/or medications.
Evidence-based testing for root causes of anxiety, depression, ADHD, and more
Functional psychiatry uses lab testing and diagnostic tools to uncover underlying biological, nutritional, and environmental imbalances contributing to mental health challenges. We want to understand the true root causes of your issues and focus on them.
Support beyond medication (nutrition, supplements, lifestyle changes, and more)
You will also receive guidance on your diet, physical activity, sleep, and targeted supplements to support the healing process as well as your long-term mental health wellness.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between functional psychiatry and traditional psychiatry?

Traditional psychiatry focuses on diagnosing mental health conditions and prescribing medication to manage symptoms. Functional psychiatry concentrates on the root causes of your mental health issues and symptoms (e.g., hormone imbalances, nutrient deficiencies, chronic stress, or bad habits) and uses a combination of conventional treatments and lifestyle-based approaches to maximize the effectiveness of your treatment.

Do I have to stop taking my current medications?

No. Functional psychiatry doesn’t require you to stop any current treatment. Instead, it works alongside what you're already doing and supports positive change in your functioning and well-being.

What kinds of tests are used in functional psychiatry?

Depending on your symptoms and history, functional psychiatry may include advanced lab tests to assess things like nutrient levels, hormones, gut health, inflammation markers, or toxin exposure. These tests help uncover hidden contributors to anxiety, depression, ADHD, and other concerns—so your treatment can be more precise and effective.
