EMDR is a powerful therapy approach that’s been proven to be effective for clients dealing with past traumatic experiences as well as other mental health issues
When something deeply upsetting happens—like trauma, loss, or intense stress—it can feel like your mind gets stuck on it. Instead of becoming part of the past, the experience keeps showing up in the present, making daily functioning difficult. You may feel overwhelmed by intense emotions, intrusive memories, or even physical tension that seems impossible to shake.
The good news is that there’s a therapy designed specifically to help you break free from this cycle: EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing).
EMDR therapy is a proven, powerful approach that helps individuals heal from difficult experiences, especially those that still feel unresolved. Whether you’re facing past trauma, stress, or emotional challenges, our trained therapists at Rock Life Counseling can guide your healing process.
EMDR is one of the most researched non-drug treatments for trauma, quickly helping you process memories and gain a healthier perspective. While it won’t magically erase memories, it reduces their emotional impact, allowing you to move forward with greater peace and stability.
Did you know? Your eyes naturally move side to side during REM sleep, helping you process memories. EMDR therapy uses a similar technique called bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sounds) to address traumatic memories.
By using bilateral stimulation, EMDR helps "unstick" difficult past experiences or memories and frees your mind and body from them.
During a session, your therapist helps you focus on the memory while activating both sides of your brain. This reduces the memory's intensity, making it feel more distant. EMDR aligns emotional, physical, and rational responses, teaching the mind and body that the trauma is over and allowing you to move forward.
For many people, EMDR is often associated only with trauma counseling, but it is a highly versatile therapeutic approach. We’ve seen EMDR help clients make significant progress in dealing with a wide range of issues, including:
EMDR’s ability to address these challenges highlights its effectiveness in fostering mental, emotional, and physical well-being beyond just trauma resolution.
What Should I Expect in an EMDR Session?
Who is a good fit for EMDR?
EMDR is suitable for individuals 8+ who are emotionally stable and ready to work on trauma. Your therapist will assess whether you are in a good place to begin.
Will I have to talk about my trauma?
Not in detail. EMDR focuses on non-verbal techniques like bilateral stimulation to help process memories without requiring extensive verbal recounting.
How many sessions will I need?
Most people need 6-12 sessions, depending on the complexity of their trauma and progress made. Some may need fewer sessions, while others may require more.
How much does EMDR cost?
EMDR sessions typically range from $130 to $175 per hour. Many therapists on our team also accept major insurance plans. We’ll work with you to ensure you fully understand the costs and any coverage details before scheduling your first appointment.
